The Surfing Bunny of Justice

My goodness me it’s been a while since I posted! Things have been busy here at Magpie Towers (my desk!) what with preparations for the summer and launching a mammoth 50% off sale in my Etsy store but I think today is the day for an update!

I often find my favourite crafts are inspired by ‘in’ jokes between friends and this is certainly no exception! Not too long ago a very good friend of mine was in court and asked me to join her to lend some moral support and also to take some notes. I felt obliged to warn her that whilst I would endeavour to do as she asked, it was quite likely that my mind would wander and I would end up doodling random nonsense, which I did of course. One of her favourite doodles (apart from a ‘skeleton argument’ and a most unflattering caricature of the appellant) was ‘The Surfing Bunny of Justice’, whom we have invoked ever since whenever an we have witnessed injustice of any kind – he stamps it out with his gargantuan feet 🙂
Even more recently my friend had a birthday (which she spent in hospital) and is today leaving the country to join the Greenpeace ship, Rainbow Warrior for a two month tour! If these were not grounds for me to bring the Surfing Bunny of Justice to life then I don’t know what would be  Grin

Without any further ado, allow me to introduce the Surfing Bunny of Justice!

Please excuse my messy, messy desk in the background! I’m an artist, I don’t do tidy 😉 I used a tutorial I found on Youtube to create the basic shape of the bunny, and winged the surfboard with a little help from my genius husband. The reverse of the surfboard has the scales of justice engraved, which I later stained with acrylic paint (sorry, I didn’t get a picture of this) All in all he took around four hours, plus 45 mins baking time 🙂

Thanks for reading to the end! As a reward, here is another picture of a forlorn looking bunny, without any ears or arms – awwwwww!

I’m so, so pleased with how he turned out and she absolutely adores him, in fact he’s travelling with her to South Korea as I type, to stamp out injustice on the high seas! Good luck out there, Katie and stay safe.

Rainbow Collection Auction for Greenpeace

She’s been bombed, shot at and rammed and now she needs your help. After 21 years as a Greenpeace ship the current Rainbow Warrior is heading for retirement and Greenpeace needs your help to replace her.

I mentioned back in February why the Rainbow Warrior is so important to me, and it is for these very good reasons that it gives me great joy to finally be able to bring you my Rainbow Collection! These five, specially designed tea light holders are being auctioned on ebay to raise funds for this incredibly worth while cause.

The set includes:

  • Red – illustrating the passion with which Greenpeace defends our planet.
  • Yellow/Orange – representing the sunny skies over our fragile Earth.
  • Green – featuring the symbol of the dove of peace which adorns the Rainbow Warrior.
  • Blue – the glistening oceans that the Greenpeace fleet is charged to defend.
  • Purple – represents the nobility of the causes that Greenpeace stands for.

You Can’t Tease A Rainbow!

Back in February I mentioned in this post that I was putting together a ‘Rainbow Collection’ to raise funds for the new Rainbow Warrior. Well I am very pleased to say that the collection is now complete! I won’t be revealing it just yet as there are still some details to finalise but I thought it only right that my loyal subscribers get a sneaky peek at what is to come 🙂

So here is your teaser, something colourful this way comes…

I am over the moon with how beautifully the collection has come together and I can hardly wait to get it moving and raising some funds! More on this as it happens, I promise 😉

In the meantime you may find some colourful clues if you hunt around my Etsy shop and there will be more sneak peeks for those who follow me on Facebook too 😉

Nocturnal Whirlpool Tea Light Holder Listed on Etsy

Last night I listed my latest tea light holder in my Etsy shop. It too was inspired by waves on the beach, but at night this time. This is definitely one of my favourite pieces so far! To get this effect I produced what is know as a ‘Skinner Blend’ (this is where two or more colours are blended together to create a blend running through one colour/shade  to another) in shades of aquamarine and cobalt blue with just a hint of sparkle, reminiscent of the foaming waves crashing to the shore whilst the ocean glints in the moonlight. It has a gorgeous, dreamy feel to it which I just love 🙂

This, along with my other creations, can be found in my Etsy Store.

Whirlpool Tea Light Holder

Here is my latest piece which was sort of a custom job and sort of a happy coincidence! I was working on a blue and white design, inspired by the crashing ocean waves , when I was contacted by a friend who wanted a gift for their ocean loving mother’s birthday. I mentioned what I was currently working on and he said it sounded perfect!

I mixed three different shades of blue which show through in a very subtle way and combined with the translucent clay for a beautiful glow. The white ‘foamy’ aspects of the swirling pattern are blended translucent and glitter white clay which gives the whole piece a gentle sparkle, just like the the sea on a sunny day 🙂

From start to finish this candle holder took 4-5 hours! I’m very happy with how it turns out and I hope it brings a smile to a special lady’s face 😀

Green Retro Geometric Tea Light Holder

Happy Monday everybody!

Today has been a beautiful, sunny day here in lush, green Shropshire and I have spent all day indoors at my computer posting new listings to my Etsy store!

In addition to a haul of vintage royal memorabilia, today saw the listing of this gorgeous thing:

I’ve had so much interest in this design that I thought it was time I gave it a re-visit. I’ve created two of these pieces in the last 24 hours, taking around 9 hours in total but it was well worth the effort!

I’m delighted with how these pieces came out and whilst one is reserved for a friend the other is available HERE. I think I’m actually grossly underselling at this price, but if I were to factor in the time taken to create, photograph and list this piece I’d be charging upwards of £30!

Green Retro Design

I struggle to bring myself to charge for the time taken on these pieces and would love some feedback: Is £30 a reasonable price for a handmade item that has taken nearly 5 hours to create? My brain says ‘yes’ but my desire to get my creations out to new people tells me to keep my prices low. What a conundrum!

Well, that’s my ramblings done for today, come back soon and I shall endeavour to witter on needlessly once again 😀

Purple Sparkle Tea light Candle Holder Listed on Etsy

Today I finally got around to listing this beautiful purple sparkly tea light holder in my Etsy store! It’s already had lots of interest which really makes me smile 🙂

I love the way this piece is just glitzy enough, without being gaudy. The sparkles are just subtle enough to be very pretty whilst avoiding that ‘covered in glitter by a six year old’ look!

I’m also really pleased with how the swirly ‘jellyroll’ aspects of the mosaic turned out. My husband says they remind him of budding flowers, just perfect for the upcoming spring – joy! 😀

You can find the listing for this piece HERE.
